Delos Awards
DELOS supported the granting of two awards
to two papers presented at the European Conference on Digital Libraries
(ECDL 2004), held in Bath, UK, on September 15-17. The DELOS awards were
presented by Liz Lyon, ECDL General Chair, on behalf of DELOS, during the
plenary closing session of ECDL 2004, on September 17.
It is expected that the DELOS Research Exchange award will be assigned also
at the next ECDL conference (ECDL 2005, Vienna, Austria, September 18-23),
while IEEE will sponsor the Best Paper award at ECDL 2005.
DELOS Best Paper Award 2004
The "DELOS Best Paper Award" was assigned to the authors of the paper
selected by the DELOS Award Committee as the best paper presented at ECDL
2004, judged on the grounds of excellence, innovation, originality,
timeliness, and likely scientific significance.
Ray Larson, of the School of Information Management and Systems, University
of California at Berkeley, USA, received this award for the paper "Spatial
Ranking Methods for Geographic Information Retrieval (GIR) in Digital
Libraries", on behalf also of the other author, namely Patricia Frontiera,
College of Environmental Design, University of California at Berkeley.
DELOS Research Exchange Award 2004
The "DELOS Research Exchange Award" was assigned to the best paper
presented at ECDL by a researcher under the age of 35. The paper was
selected by the Award Committee not only on the ground of scientific
excellence, but also considering the additional conditions that the lead
author be a "young researcher" and the research had been carried out mainly
at a European research organization.
This award was intended to recognise
the achievement of the author by offering him/her the chance to spend a
period of time (at least a one month) at a DELOS European partner research
organisation. The visit will allow the young researcher to establish or
reinforce contacts with groups that are relevant to his/her areas of
research interest. The DELOS team will assist the young researcher to set
up the visit. The DELOS Prize will meet the expenses related to the visit,
up to a maximum of 4000 EUR.
Markus Franke, of the Institut für Informationswirtschaft und Management,
Universität Karlsruhe, Germany, received this award for his paper
"Automated Indexing with Restricted Random Walks on Large Document Sets",
written in collaboration with Andreas Geyer-Schulz, Institut für
Informationswirtschaft und Management, Universität Karlsruhe, Germany.
